School, Library and Event Speaking

I love to speak to students or to children and adults about my books, the process of writing, illustrating and publishing; and the journey of the story from idea to book. I am available for school and public library visits across the country. Some of my popular workshops are:

Meeting the Kids at the Beach with Herman (Children, Preschool-Kindergarten) The youngest audiences meet A Day at the Beach and Herman the Hermit Crab through reading and discussion. (30 minutes) Master coloring master provided.

Meeting an Author/Illustrator – What do we do? (Children, Grade 1-2) The children are introduced to A Day at the Beach, ABCs at the Zoo!, Herman the Hermit Crab!, and Helga, the Hippopotamouse. Student’s are given a brief walk through each book and I explain how the pictures were drawn and where the ideas came from. Helpful ideas are given to aspiring artists. (1 hour) Master find-a-word and coloring sheets provided. (Digital demonstrations available.)

The Story Behind the Story (Children, Grade 3-4) Every child has natural curiosity --using illustrations, text, and research--we explore the challenges behind ABCs at the Zoo! and learn the importance of research for both authors and illustrators. What's an author's life like? How much do we get paid? What about rejection and revision? Actual dummies and press sheets will be displayed. (1 – 1.5 hour) Master find-a-word and matching sheets provided. (Digital demonstrations available.)

Writing, Illustrating & Publishing – How it’s done, is it for you? (Grade 4 to 12) This session focuses on the technical aspect of the book and printing industry. Topics discussed are: discipline; editing; contacting publishers; query letters; handling rejection; rewriting; redrawing; research; copyright; plagiarizing; finding a publisher, and marketing.
